My ladakh diaries

This is a brief account of what all I experienced during my one week in Leh, Ladakh from the 15th of june to the 22nd of june 2015. This post is not all that about what to do in leh and ladakh because lets be honest, you already know much of that. It'l be more about the hospitality and the warmth we received from the people of leh which made our stay there even more worthwhile.

Four of us went together and from the moment we landed in leh , it was clear that the localites  were followers of the concept of "atithi devo bhava" ( The guest is equivalent to God) . The taxi driver who we met there was a lean and short guy but full of energy and was very keen to lend us his service till our homestay .

We had booked Tukchu Homestay for our stay in Leh which is around 3-4 Km from the airport and very near Shanti stupa. we had talked to the owner Mr Tashi over the phone and he had agreed to give us 2 rooms for the entire duration of the 7 days and had also agreed to check us out on one day , without any extra charge when we were not staying the night at his place because of our visit to Nubra valley.

So basically, Mr Tashi is an engineer in BSNL,Leh and his wife is nurse in a local Primary health centre . Tashi's sister also lives with them and helps them in running the homestay. He has 7 rooms for his guests and believe you me staying there was no less than being at home. The warmth , hospitality and the feeling of being with loved one's was something which I never experienced at any hotel before. The main difference between homestays and hotels which I found on this trip is that in hotels a person is treated somewhat like a commodity whereas in this case the bond is much better.

Tashi was not only a great host , but he also helped us out in booking cabs for our visits to Pangong and Nubra valley and even helped us find cheap rental bikes for visiting local places . We had made an entire itinerary before going to leh but interacting with other people staying at Tashi's homestay made us improve our plans and made the entire trip very efficient . The dinner conversations and cokctails with the other guests and Tashi were something which we would look forward to every day

His wife is an excellent cook and we were treated to some great cuisines , be it local ladakh specialities or otherwise. The food was always served hot and fresh and her tea is to die for. We used to have atleast 5-6 cups of tea everyday and were still left longing for more. I could not imagine how she used to manage the PHC at night and the homestay in the morning , but somehow she along with Tashi's sister are doing an excellent job.

Sharing some of Tukhu homestay's photos :

Next up we went to Pangong lake with two families with met in Tashi's homestay. We hired a cab which Tashi helped us with and we got a 15% discount on the final amount which was obviously welcome. The trip was very much worth it and I fell in love with the surreal beauty that ladkah had to offer . The peace , the calm and the general laid-back attitude of the people was to die for , a great change from the metropolitan menace we have to go through otherwise.

Then was a bike ride to Lamayuru Monestry , which is around 125 Km from Leh on the Srinagar / kargil road. The drive was splendid with great roads courtesy Border Roads Organisation (BRO) . The view  was again great with the Indus river flowing with us for much of the drive. The wind gushing to your face and the mountain peaks in front of you was something really special , but that wasn't the best thing I felt that day. The best moment I had was meeting a person(in picture) in Lamayuru monestry who had come there from Mumbai just as a volunteer and was teaching Mathematics to the children in the monestry.

One of people we met in Tukchu's homestay advised us to stay in a homestay in Turtuk village in Nubra valley , so we decided to check it out when we visited Nubra valley. We had hired a cab like we did for Pangong and just like Pangong lake , our driver was amazing , A fun guy who knew the mountains in and out and was the source of a lot of entertainment for us on the way. He wanting me to get posted to Thoise was something which was a bit far fetched but other then that we had a great time :P

So when we finally reached Turtuk village , a small and quiet place , 11 km from the Pakistan border ,we were greeted by Karim bhai ( the one with the blue shirt in the picture) , the owner of Bagdour home stay . He used to work with Ladakh scouts before leaving service and opening this homestay. He is a gem of a person who was very kind and friendly all throughout our stay there. The rooms we stayed in were not only very clean and cosy but were also very very easy on the pocket. He gave us a tour of the entire village free of cost and showed us the small things that made the place so famous and special. The land in Turtuk is perfect for agriculture and thus it was not surprising to see that agriculture was the major source of income for the people in the village.

A lot of things have to go right for a vacation to be a great experience, right from the planning to the place to the people and luckily in our case all of this fell right into place to make one perfect life long experience . That is why in the beginning I mentioned that this post won't be much about what to do in leh , becuase boring you with information you about Khardung La , Pangong , magnetic hill and the confluence of Indus & Zansakr river won't do you much good, but sharing these experiences might.  I am sharing the contact details
of Karim bhai , owner of Bagdour home stay in Turtuk village , Mr Tashi , owner of Tukchu Guest house in Leh and Mr Tsewang , our driver . These would surely be useful while you plan your trip to this paradise.

The open ended post! Manchester United Vs Liverpool

My last post was in August 2014,after sacrificing on my night's sleep and having to pay the price for it the very next day. But it felt good to write after such a long time and even now experiencing the same feeling. Though I do not know where this post is heading, even then just to write something is in itself a satisfying feeling.

This year went by in the trace of a bullet, explored two new cities , a career which till a couple of years back was a distant dream,so all in all ,feeling complete .

Coming back to things which matter a little more,in my last post ,I had mentioned that it could be the same story for Manchester united once again after they slumped to 2-1 defeat at home in their 1st match of the season against Swansea.

15 matches into the season ,sitting at the 3rd spot aand on a 5 match winning streak ,even after being plagued by 40 odd injuries,Van Gaal has proved to lift the side up till this point. A mouth watering clash against Arch rivals Liverpool beckons this Sunday and a win would further cement their position in the top 4 and would certainly give them a boost for guaranteeing themselves a champions league spot.

Luis Suarez is a distant memory: - Manchester United Vs Liverpool: 4 things that have changed since their last meeting

Liverpool look a shadow of what they were last season, when they were pushing for the title and were looking to end their 2 decade long title drought. With Suarez and Sturridge teaming up and causing havoc to the opponent's defence, it seemed as if all was well for Liverpool once more , but with Suarez moving on to greener pastures and Sturridge sidelined due to injury , the make shift attacking trio of Liverpool has managed just 3 goals between them till this point.

The fan favourite Balotelli has been in appalling form ,still awaiting his first premier league goal for Liverpool . Last year at this point ,Moyes was under tremendous pressure to produce results for united , look how the tables have turned with United sitting relatively comfortably but Rodgers having to fight for his job and struggling to keep his team in the top half of the table

An early champions league exit would not have helped his team's confidence at all and at this point even a draw would seem like a great result when Rodgers and co. head to old Trafford tomorrow. The photo posted above, mocking Chelsea ,Tottenham and their latest European victims Liverpool was uploaded by FC Basel to their official Instagram account and was later conveniently removed. I am still wondering if they are really good at social media or just very very bad at it. We'l see what they do if drawn against another English team in the round of 16 this time.

There is speculation about Falcao making  a return in tomorrow's clash ,only time will tell as to how true that speculation is . United still have a lot of injury woes and if that could be sorted out as soon as possible , it would further strengthen the side .As far as Liverpool go ,putting the make shift United defence under pressure early is the best way to go tomorrow and Steven Gerrard's recent form shows that he can still torment any side on his day.

Steven Gerrard has scored more goals (five) than any other away player at Old Trafford in the Premier League

An equally important match for both teams, for different reasons though ,whatever the result be ,a pulsating contest is in store this Sunday evening.

Manchester united -New season , same story all over again ?

After the fanfare, the testimonies, the kit deals, the pre season triumphs, comes the crushing reality.
Louis van Gaal , the former Barcelona , Bayern Munich and Netherlands manager  was welcomed to one of the greatest football clubs this weekend. Yes Mamchester united is a great club , but a club that is in shambles right now.
The new EPL season got under way this weekend and it seemed as if Manchester united carried on from where it left off last season , a 1-2 loss to swansea at home.
A ground where teams once used to dread coming has fast become a venue for teams to come and accumulate points at will.
Van Gaal admitted Manchester United needed to bring in “better players” as he reflected on a miserable start to his reign as manager and warned the current squad they had to show they could cope with the pressures of playing at Old Trafford.
United went into this game with Tyler Blackett making his league debut , which was bad strategy on the think tank's part . The departure of Ferdinand , Evra and vidic has not helped the defence one bit.

There are speculations of Marcos Rojo joining Man U from Sporting Libson , a deal if successful would strenghthen the defence somewhat.
More on this below :

http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/500403/Man-Utd-close-in-on-Marcos-Rojo-as-Sporting-ask-for-Nani-or-Anderson-on-loan-to-seal-deal

Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera the only new faces added this summer will not be enough to propel United to the top and new are desperately needed. An indepth analysis of all of United's transfer hopes below :

Yes it was only one match but fans have started to get restless and a victory away at Sunderland may help calm some nerves for everyone who is envolved. If Van persie makes a comeback this week it will surely be a positive element for the team.

Capital one cup and FA cup : Make or break competitions for David Moyes

With 22 points from 15 games Manchester United languish at the 9th spot, 13 points adrift Premier league leaders Arsenal . It is evident from this season's performance that David Moyes has found it difficult to get going as United's manager . But all is not lost as of yet for the Ex- Everton boss.

Manchester United face Stoke City on Wednesday in their Capital One cup Quarter final . In the most recent meeting, they beat Stoke 3-2 at Old Trafford after twice coming back from behind . If they win it will put them through to the Semi final's . The red devils desperately need revival of some sorts to get their premier league season back on track . This match could be what David Moyes requires. A win here will give him a shot at putting some silverware in United's trophy cabinet as his first season in charge .

The League Cup is not a particularly important or even  prestigious trophy. If Manchester United are aiming for the League Cup you could say that this is a sign of just how far they have fallen. But something is always better than nothing.

Double goal-scorer Ruud van Nistelrooy (right) celebrates with team-mate Wes BrownRon Atkinson and Sir Alex Ferguson understood this very thing. Atkinson's first trophy in-charge of United was a FA cup trophy in  1982-83 . Sir Alex Ferguson won the FA cup in 2004 , which was Cristiano Ronaldo's first trophy as a United player. That was the basis for the Rooney / Ronaldo striking partnership which went on the wreak havoc in the years to follow .

More on that 2004 FA cup victory against Millwall below :
http://www.theguardian.com/football/2004/may/24/match.manchesterunited

On the other hand United have drawn Swansea City as their 3rd round FA cup opponents. This match is to be played in the 1st week of January. The FA cup is a far more prestigious trophy and hence a much more difficult one to win , but i guess Wigan and Roberto Martinez would beg to differ .

It's been ages since the red devils last won the FA cup ( 2004 ). Yes there are more pressing issues at hand right now but Moyes needs to keep the FA cup on his radar as he might need another route into Europe for next season. The normal one is proving more difficult to navigate than usual.

As far as the champions league goes , Manchester United have done quite well grabbing 14 points and topping group A , their best group stage performance since 2007-08 when they ended up winning the UCL . The round of 16 is up next and possible opponents are Galatasaray , Olympiakos , Schalke , Zenit and AC milan . It is too early to comment on what lies ahead in the UCL for the red devils but they have their work cut out in the other three competitons.

David Moyes claps after United beat Shakhtar Donetsk
With successive home defeats for the first time since 2002 , the sluggish United side need to regain their lost form and that too very quickly. They face Aston Villa away from home on sunday desperately needing the 3 points to get back to winning ways in the EPL. What United have which other struggling sides in the Premier League do not - is quality and experience of getting out of difficult situations. They will need to rely on all of this and a whole lot more if they want to dig themselves out of the hole they currently find themselves in.

D-day for Delhi , It's 04.12.2013

After following the election news for the past 2 months, the day has finally arrived, it's 04.12.2013 . As everyone in Delhi knows, It's time for change and the Sheila Dikshit led congress must be shown the door , something which the Congress would be aware of as well .

Though i have the utmost respect for Mr. Arvind Keijriwal , but I feel that he will find it very difficult in fulfilling the claims he has made. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) prides itself in being a clean and a non corrupt party with the mission of sweeping the city from all forms of corruption. This claim was put under the scanner a couple of weeks back when a party member was caught on tape taking a monetary donation without giving a valid receipt to the donor. Though the party managed to get a clean chit , it's image did take a dent post this incident.

Representational image. AFPThe campaigning for these assembly elections had been on in full swing and as is the norm, they had to stop 2 days before the elections which came as a relief to us delhities. Loud rallies,  people taking to the streets in their two wheelers and shouting slogans for the party they support , posters thrown on the streets , stickers on every electricity pole and a lot more is what we had to face during the past few months.

But i guess, with time there is a change in the campaigning methodology as well. Technology and social media proved two ideal mediums as for the first time , there was a big buzz on twitter and facebook with people, party members and loyalists leaving no stone unturned to give their party any sort of edge leading into the elections. Hashtags were made use off on twitter , with hashtags like #Vote4AamAadmiParty , #AAPSweepingDelhi filling our home pages day in and day out. The AAP made the best use of the micro blogging site with BJP's Chief ministerial candidate trending for a short time as well with his hashtag of #DrSaheb4Delhi

Read more about this :
http://www.firstpost.com/politics/delhi-polls-aap-leads-on-twitter-facebook-but-is-it-enough-1264229.html

So now the question is whom to vote for? Definitely not congress, that's for sure. So we are left with 3 options, BJP , AAP or the choice of 'None of the above', though that would just be wasting a vote.
The Congress had a stronghold in east Delhi the last time around but i guess this time it will be a different story with BJP being very confident of a win in East delhi.

#cashforvotes was heard of , but today #boozeforvotes came into the picture. One day before the elections , both the BJP and the Congress were caught red handed supplying Booze to the people in slum areas in return for their votes. So much for their credibility . More on that in the link below .

http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/delhi-elections-congress-bjp-get-delhi-high-a-day-before-voting-day/1/327703.html

This is the first time i will be voting and i was confused between the BJP and the AAP , but the booze scandal has given me the clarity to got out tomorrow and vote for the Aam Aadmi Party. They may not be able to fulfill all the claims they have made , but atleast they will give it their best shot.

Choose your candidate not on past experiences or prejudice , but on credibility and accountability. It doesn't matter who wins tomorrow, the people of Delhi just want to see an anti corrupt government which is willing to work for the people and show their faces to the public a little more often during their stay in power.
Enjoy the holiday and make sure that you vote.

A list of must watch Tv shows

Being an engineer by qualification has it's perks , one of them being that you have a lot of time to while away and spend on things that don't matter much. Let's accept it , Engineering was more or less a vacation with some bumps in between ( read mid terms and semester exams) and that vacation gave me , and i guess a lot of others a list of some of the best of what the American and British television had to offer.

So, here is a list of my favourite TV shows , not necessarily in order of their precedence. I'l also try and mention a quote from each of the shows i enlist below. I have included a minimalist poster of each show, it's more fun that way :)

1.  The Wire : (2002-2008)  IMDB rating 9.4/10  , TV.com rating 9/10

If you are a fan of the HBO original series ,then i am sure that you would have seen or atleast heard of this show. Set in the city of Baltimore , the show deals with city's drug situation and the efforts of the Baltimore Police to curb the trade. Personally, one of my top 3 shows of all time and this one is highly recommended for all who have not been able to come around to watch it .

omar Little - "Lesson here, 'Bey : You come at the King, you best not miss.."

2.  Breaking Bad : (2008-2013) IMDB rating 9.5/10 , TV.com rating 9/10

This show needs no introduction, it's been the talk of the town in the recent past. Featuring one of the coolest chemistry teachers in history and his junkie of a partner Jesse Pinkman . Both of them along with a little help from fellow crystal meth manufacturers are hell bent on capturing the drug market in and around Albuquerque .

Pinkman - " Yo mista white , Let's cook some meth"

3. Game of Thrones : (2011- Present) IMDB rating 9.4/10 , TV.com rating 9/10

Seven , so called noble families, One Kingdom called  Westeros. Let the games begin . Violence , sex and a whole lot more.  An almost perfect script and some intriguing screenplay makes this a must watch.  Another HBO original Series.

"Winter is Coming"

4. F.R.I.E.N.D.S  : ( 1994-2004)  IMDB rating 8.8

Six friends, who struggle their way through life and always have each others back in every situation. I wish real life friendships were as pure as this reel life show depicted .

Rachel to Joey - I don' t want my baby's  first words to be "How you doing" .

5.  Sherlock : ( 2010 - present ) IMDB rating 9.2

A 21st century version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyal's masterpiece. Benedict Cumberbatch has done a whole lot of justice to the mental image of Sherlock Holmes we all have in our minds. 221/B Baker street is still the same , it's just that the modernisation has been carried out with such utter ease that for a second it manages to trick the audience into believing that Sherlock Holmes is a 21st century consulting detective.

6. The Sopranos ( 1999-2007 ) IMDB rating 9.2

A quite intriguing story about New jersey's mob boss Tony sopranos , as he tries to juggle his  personal and professional life simultaneously .

7. Arrested Development (2003-2013 ) IMDB rating 9.1

A show revolving around Micheal , who takes over his family business after his father is imprisoned. But he faces a ton of problems along the way as he has to deal with his dysfunctional family who are not making things easy for him. Utter chaos and laughter.

8 . The IT crowd ( 2006- Present )  IMDB rating 8.5

Two socially awkward IT guys , one misfit lady who is working with these two in the basement of a large corporation. Personally, one of my favourite British comedy shows. Laughter galore.

9. The Inbetweeners ( 2008-2010 ) IMDB rating 8.3

4 friends , who try everything in their power to be one of the cool one's in school but fail miserably every time. They are in search of two things every guy wants, Beer and Sex. They generally end up with none of these. A must watch if you want to have a laugh or two.

10 . Entourage (2004- 2011 ) IMDB rating 8.5

Another HBO original series, the show portray's the life of a film star "Vincent chase " who makes it big in Hollywood , with the help of his close knit of friends , a bit of a has been actor- cousin , Johnny 'Drama' Chase and his trustworthy agent Ari Gold.

Ari - "We're going to hell so bring your sunblock"

11. Scrubs ( 2001-2010) IMDB rating 8.4

John Dorian gets to learn a lot about medicine , friendship , life and a whole lot more as he tries to make his way in Sacred Heart hospital. A light show, with the right mix of laughter and emotions. It was a bit of a drag in the last few seasons, but was well worth the watch .

12. The Big Bang theory ( 2007- Present ) IMDB rating 8.6

No need introducing this one. Sheldon , Penny , Raj , Leonard Howard , Amy and Bernadette. A show which can make you laugh even when you are down for the count. Currently in it's seventh season .

Sheldon - "Bazinga"

13. Californication ( 2007- Present ) IMDB rating 8.4

A writer , played by David Duckovny , tries to manage his washed up career, his ex girlfriend , his daughter and his appetite for the women kind. This show started off very well , but the sixth season was not at all upto the mark. Hoping for some improvement in the seventh season.

14. Modern Family ( 2009 -Present ) IMDB rating 8.6

Three families which are very much inter connected , but are a whole lot different from one another. A light hearted show which manages to leave some kind of a message every episode.

15. South Park (1997- Present ) IMDB rating 8.8

One dysfunctional town of South park , four foul mouthed 4th graders . Weird things keep happening in this town and no one seems to care . It used to be aired in India , but was banned by the government some time back. Should give you an idea on what all goes on in this show. Anyways , a must watch :D

16. Shameless US ( 2011- Present ) IMDB rating 8.5

A totally wacky show. Different both in it's script and it's execution. An alcoholic father with 6 kids to raise but all he can think about his where his next glass of beer will come from.

17.  Band of Brothers ( 2001) IMDB rating 9.5

The story of East company of the US army's 101 Airborne division and their mission in World war II. Directed by Tom Hanks. A solitary season with 10 episodes to die for.

I will constantly be updating this blog post. Still a long way to go before this post is done. A lot of shows still in the pipeline. :)

Manchester United vs Arsenal : A preview to one of the most important matches this season.

Last night Arsenal defeated an in form Borussia Dortmund 1-0 at Signal Iduna Park to cement their place at the top of Group F of the champions league. A group which was called the group of death at the beginning of the champions league campaign has lived upto it's hype with last year's UCL finalist Dortmund in the third spot with two matches to go. On the contrary , most of  the football Guru's felt that Arsenal's way to the round of 16 would be under a lot of jeopardy with them being in the same group as Dortmund and Napoli.

Hi-res-185622491-aaron-ramsey-of-arsenal-marshalls-marcel-schmelzer-of_crop_650x440
After 4 matches Arsenal is well on their way to the next round with 3 wins and 1 loss. Injuries to the likes of Walcott and Podolski has not been much of a blow to Arsene Wenger's men as they lie pretty in the Premier League standings with a 5 point cushion at the top. Yes, Arsenal have had a comparatively easier start to their EPL campaign, which is seen from the fact that they have played only two top 10 teams so far. That however does not take anything away from the fact that they have played some amazing football this year and are the team to take the most number of premier league points since January 2013.

Mezut Ozil has made a huge impact after his transfer to Arsenal , with Ramsey and Giroud being two men on a mission and are looking to make every opportunity count. Ramsey who was kind of a scapegoat last season for the Gunners miseries has more than made up for it this season  by scoring goals at the rate of knots.

Run away winners last season, Manchester united have not gotten off to a great start by their standards and are languishing at the 8th spot after 10 matches with a gap of 8 points between them and leaders ,Arsenal. With losses to West bromwich albion  , Liverpool and Manchester City there is much to do for  David Moyes , if he wants to have any shot at retaining the title. Manchester United have now gone 8 matches without losing in all competitions and are on the top of Group A of the champions league , slowly moving towards qualification for the round of 16 and finally showing some indications of coming back to form .

The two teams will fight it out at Old Trafford on the 10th of November and this match will  be a big indicator to where the season is headed . If Manchester United pull off a victory they will reduce the gap between them and the leaders to 5 points and will give their season the much needed impetus. On the other hand if Wenger's men manage a victory it will give them further confidence in their quest to regaining the EPL trophy , which they last won in 2004.

Arsenal will come into this match with momentum on their side after a great victory against an in form Dortmund side whereas Manchester United who drew their champions league clash against Real Sociedad after Van persie missed a penalty, will have a lot to do if they want to get the better of the table toppers.

Robin van Persie sees his penalty saved by Real Sociedad’s Claudio Bravo (Getty)Robin Van persie , Wayne Rooney and Januzaj have made a delightful trio in the recent past and the forward line is now more or less settled with Chicharito being the Super sub . The problem lies mainly at the back where Jones, Rafael ,Smalling and the likes are not at all looking comfortable . The addition of Vidic will surely strengthen the defense and they would look to reduce the load on Dea Gea, who is being forced to make terrific saves match after match. So, all eyes will be on Old Trafford this weekend for what should be a riveting clash .
